How Fans Created the MLS Supporters’ Shield

(September/October 2025) In Major League Soccer, the Supporters’ Shield honors the team with the best regular-season record. First awarded in 1999, the shield was conceived and funded entirely by fans who believed season-long performance deserved recognition. A grassroots effort led by Sam Pierron was boosted by early donations from ESPN commentator Phil Schoen and MLS commissioner Doug Logan, ultimately raising nearly $3,000 and culminating in the trophy’s unveiling in the closing weeks of the 1999 season.

The original shield, crafted by University of Missouri–Kansas City art student Paula Richardson, featured a chevron design and was made of sterling silver sheet metal. As the shield grew in importance, a redesigned version was commissioned by the Supporters’ Shield Foundation. Completed in early 2013, the current shield is made of sterling silver and stainless steel and weighs roughly 35 pounds. It retains the original chevron in its center and features engraved rings for future winners.

The 2025 MLS regular season wraps up on Decision Day—Saturday, Oct. 18—and the shield is awarded afterward to the club with the most points over the season.
